What is Duract used for?

Duract, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, and was approved in July 1997 for the short-term management of acute pain.

Why was Duract Recalled (or why should it be) ?

Duract was recalled on June 22, 1998 after several cases of rare severe hepatitis and liver failure. Some of the cases required transplantation in patients that took Duract for more than 10 days.

Duract was never approved for longer-term use.

At the time of the Duract withdrawal the FDA received reports of 4 deaths, 8 patients who survived but required a liver transplant, and 12 other patients with serious but less severe liver damage. Since then even more of Duract's adverse effects and fatalities were discovered to have occurred. and was never approved for longer-term use.
