Alinia for the treatment of diarrhea

What is Alinia prescribed for?
Alinia is prescribed for the treatment of diarrhea caused by the parasites Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lambia in children ages 1 through 11. Safety and effectiveness of Alinia is not known in patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), patients with immune problems, children less than 1, children greater than 11, or adults.

There are some things that you should tell your doctor when taking this medication:

Tell your doctor if you:

  • have diabetes, because Alinia contains sucrose, a type of sugar
  • have or had liver problems
  • have or had kidney problems
  • have or had bile or gallbladder problems

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Some medicines may affect how Alinia works or Alinia may affect how your other medicines work.

Some possible side effects with Alinia include:

  • abdominal pain
  • diarrhea
