Dangers of Herceptin
What is Herceptin used for?
Herceptin is a drug that was intended to regulate cell growth for cancer patients. Used for the treatment of HER2 positive metastatic breast cancer.
Why was Herceptin Recalled (or why should it be) ?
A FDA warning was issued regarding Herceptin. It warned of the risk of developing ventricular dysfunction and congestive heart failure following the reports of 15 deaths with Herceptin patients.
Herceptin was quickly linked to deaths and serious complications despite the belief that it would extend the survival rate of cancer patients. An estimated 25,000 cancer patients have used the medication. Fatal anaphylaxis, infusion reactions leading to possible death, and pulmonary events occurred because of the use of Herceptin.
Taking the drug can result in the development of ventricular dysfunction and congestive heart failure. Discontinuation of HERCEPTIN treatment should be strongly thought about in patients who develop a clinically significant decrease in left ventricular function.
