What is Mellaril used for?

Mellaril is used for the management of schizophrenic patients that have not responded to other antipsychotic drugs.

Why was Mellaril Recalled (or why should it be) ?

Not yet recalled. Due to the high risk of serious, potentially life-threatening conditions Mellaril is not used until other methods have failed. An FDA Drug Warning was issued informing physicians of the labeling changes occurring on Mellaril.

Mellaril now contains a warning indicating that it has been shown to prolong the QTc interval in a dose related manner that is associated to sudden death and de pointes-type arrhythmias.

What Makes Mellaril a dangerous Drug ( side effects and risks):

  • Death
  • arrhythmias
  • chest pain or breathlessness.
