What is Norplant used for?
Norplant is a implantable contraceptive drug.
Why was Norplant Recalled (or why should it be) ?
Not yet recalled. Since it was approval the contraceptive has been controversial due to its side effects and the companies failure to communicate the risks of side effects to the patients. American Home Products, Norplant manufacturer, has consistently denied they did anything wron, yet Norplant has been involved in tens of thousands of lawsuits over the years.
Patients have alleged that Norplant makers failed to warn them about the severity of side effects they may experience. The first Norplant lawsuit went to trial in 1998 and the makers of the medication agreed to offer cash settlements.
What Makes Norplant a dangerous Drug ( side effects and risks):
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Irregular menstrual bleeding
- Ovarian cysts,
- Weight gain,
- Removal problems
- Depression

i used norplant 1 year, i gained weight, i never went to menstrual periods.now i removd it but even now,iam not seeing it.is it dangerous to my body

I got my norplant in in 1993. By 1996 I had gone from 130 to 240 lbs. It also caused cysts…and extreme abdominal pain.

I had Norplant implanted and for 6 straight months I had SEVERE migraines, DRASTIC mood swings and HUGE weight gain….I would never recommend this product to anyone, in fact if i hear anyone mention that they are thinking about getting it, I tell them what happened to me and tell them not to do it.
After 6 months I DEMANDED that it be removed or I would remove it, never again have I used anything like it since.

I always wondered if the Norplant was still available to women. I got on the Norplant back in 97 when my second child was born. I gained weight without my eating habits changing. I also stopped getting my period. After a year I took it off. I was never again able to get pregnant and hardly ever got my period. I got diagnosed with Uterine Cancer last year and often wonder if the Norplant was the first step to the reason why my health problems. Please do not use this product.

I had 2 Norplants which I kept in my arm for 10 years. I never gained weight, I never had headaches, I never had an unwanted pregnancy. A year after the first one was removed, I had a cyst. My OBGYN said that Norplants were being used to reduce cysts, so I got another one. Plus it was so great not to have to worry about getting pregnant or even have a period. My cyst went away. I have had virtually no menopausal or pre-menopausal symptoms before my Norplant was removed at age 53. I would recommend the Norplant. It was great for me. It’s too bad that it’s not still easily accessible in the US. Women would have a great option.
