What is Precedex prescribed for?

Precedex is an intravenous (IV) sedative used in intensive care patients who need manually or mechanically operated medical equipment to keep air flowing into and out of their lungs. Precedex should not be given constantly for more than 24 hours.

How should Precedex be given?

• Precedex should only be given by doctors who are skilled in managing patients in an intensive care setting. Because of the action of Precedex, patients on Precedex should be continuously monitored. Significant decreases in blood pressure and slow heartbeat can occur.

• Precedex is given intravenously (IV) over 24 hours or less using a device that controls the amount of drug that is given.

What should be avoided while taking Precedex?

Precedex should be used with caution in patients who:

• are pregnant or are breast-feeding
• have a history of heart-related health problems (e.g., advanced heart block)
• have a history of liver disease
