Zyvox antibiotic for bacterial infections

What is Zyvox used for?

Zyvox is an antibiotic that is used to treat adults with certain bacterial infections.
Zyvox does not work on viral infections and should not be taken for Viral infections like the common cold).

General Precautions to take when on Zyvox:

  • Phenylketonuric patients should not take Zyvox oral suspension because it contains phenylalanine (a part of aspartame). The other Zyvox formulations do not contain phenylalanine.
  • People taking Zyvox should avoid foods and beverages high in tyramine content. Health care professional can provide a list of foods and beverages containing tyramine.

There are some things that you should tell your doctor when taking this medication:

Tell your doctor if you:

  • have high blood pressure
  • are taking any kind of cold or decongestant type medications.
  • are taking a medication for depression
  • are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or if you are currently breast feeding. It is not known if there are any effects on unborn children or nursing infants, but it is better to be on the safe side with this kind of medication.

Certain types of medications can interact with Zyvox, tell your doctor what medications you are taking, including those that you take without a prescription

The side effects of Zyvox are generally mild, but serious side effects including decreased number of platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells (myelosuppression) have been reported in some people receiving Zyvox since it became available.

Other side effects may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Nausea
