Cascara Sagrada is a bark that is often used to treat stomach aliments. The Bark is rich in oils that promote peristaltic action in the intestinal canal. This bark is thought to be one of the remedies that can be used for chronic constipation. The bark increases the secretions of the stomach, liver, and pancreas and has a a good effect onĀ  constipation.

It has been used for many years by American Indian Groups Long as a laxative. Cascara sagrada bark caught on in western medicine aroundĀ  1877. In 1890, Americans replaced the berries of the European buckthorn as an official laxative. To this day, It is still used in over-the-counter laxatives that are available in every pharmacy in the United States.

It has been effective to the gall ducts, and in helping the body rid itself of gallstones. Cascara is very valuable whenever there are hemorrhoids because of poor bowel function. Cascara Sagrada contains B-Complex, calcium, potassium, manganese, traces of tin, lead, strontium and aluminum.
