Aspartame, one of the most dangerous sweeteners on the market is now being used in over 6000 different products. The approval of aspartame in 1974 was the most contested approval in FDA history. Most people didn’t want it to be approved because it had been linked to causing brain cancer in lab animals. The sweetener was only approved because of strong political and financial pressure that was put on the FDA.
Consumer advocates have been warning the FDA for years about potential problems in children, pregnant women and even ordinary people. They say that brain cancers are on the rise, and they suspect Aspartame could be one of the problems.
Consumers have actually reported over 7000 different side effects to the FDA, yet they have done nothing. Aspartame has been linked to brain tumors, seizures and a wide range of other neurological problems.
When the original studies were submitted to the FDA, most of the data was changed to make it look like Aspartame was completely safe. Some FDA officials were so upset that they tried to present information to the US attorney in hopes of spurring an investigation, but that never happened.
In 1981, President Regan’s new FDA commissioner overruled 3 outside and 3 internal scientists who said that it should not be marketed. Many of the people at the FDA who were responsible for letting this dangerous sweetener on the market ended up with high power jobs in the Aspartame industry.
